What decides the cost of building an app in India?

"How much will my app cost?" is the first question almost every client asks. The honest answer is "it depends". Here's exactly what it depends on, so you can plan your budget and compare quotes fairly.

1. Number of screens and features

Every screen (login, dashboard, order form, report) and every feature (search, notifications, payments) takes design, building and testing time. This is the biggest cost factor. A tool with 10 screens costs far less than a system with 60.

2. Who uses it, and with what permissions

An app for a single user is simpler than a system where the owner, managers, staff, distributors and customers each see different things. More user roles mean more screens, more rules and more testing.

3. Platforms: Android, iOS, web, or all three

Building for Android only is cheaper than Android + iPhone + a web panel. In India, many business apps start with Android and a web panel, then add iOS later if needed.

4. Connections to other systems

Connecting to payment gateways, WhatsApp, SMS, Tally, Google Sheets or government services adds work, but often saves you far more time later.

5. AI features

Features like reading bills, chatbots or smart predictions add development work and a small ongoing running cost (AI services are usually paid per use). Worth it when they replace hours of manual work.

6. Design quality

A simple, clean design is affordable. Highly custom animations and branding cost more. For business software, clear and simple usually wins.

7. Security and data sensitivity

Apps that handle payments, health records or device control need extra security work and testing. This is not a place to cut corners.

8. Running costs after launch

Remember the ongoing costs: server hosting, domain, app store accounts, AI usage, and a support plan for fixes and updates. Ask for these in your quote so there are no surprises.

How to keep the budget under control

  1. Start with an MVP, the smallest version that solves the main problem. Add features once real users ask for them.
  2. Write down exactly what you need, even as a simple list. Clear requirements mean accurate quotes.
  3. Approve designs before coding. Changing a design is cheap; changing finished code is not.
  4. Ask for a fixed, written quote with scope, timeline and payment milestones.
  5. Compare quotes on scope, not just price. A cheap quote that leaves out testing, support or code ownership often costs more later.
